 What is a network?

  • A digital telecommunications network which allows nodes to share resources.
    • Router
    • Switch
    • Firewall
    • Server
    • Client

Building a network

  • PC1 to PC1
    • A digital telecommunications network which allows nodes to share resources.

Clients

  • A client is a device that accesses a service made available by a server

Servers

  • A client is a device that accesses a service made available by a server
  • A server is a device that provides functions or services to a client

Servers and client

  • PC1 to PC2
    • Either can be a client or server
  • Your Comp to YouTube
  • Phone to Phone
  • A client is a device that accesses a service made available by a server
  • A server is a device that provides functions or services to a client
    • The same device can be a client in some situations and a server in other situations

Switches

  • LAN (Local Area Network)
  • Have many network interfaces/ports for end hosts to connect to (usually  24+)
  • Provide connectivity to hosts within the same LAN (Local Area Network)
  • Do not provide connectivity between LANs/over the internet

Routers

Routers

  • Have fewer network interfaces than switches
  • Are used to provide connectivity between LANs
  • Are used to send data over the internet

Firewalls

Firewalls

  • Monitor and control network traffic based on configured rules
  • Can be “inside” the network, or “outside” the network
  • AKA Next Generation Firewalls when they include more modern and advanced filtering capabilities
  • What about the firewall on your computer?

Network firewalls

  • Are hardware devices that filter traffic between networks

Host-based firewalls

  • Are software applications that filter traffic entering and exiting a host machine, like a PC

Quiz 1

Your company wants to purchase some networking hardware to which they can plug the 30 PCs in your department.  Which type of network device is appropriate?

  1. Router
    1. Forward traffic between networks is not connecting the end host. And typically won’t have 30 network interfaces
  2. Firewall
    1. Filters traffic as it enters and exits local network, not designed to connect to end hosts and typically doesn’t have interfaces for 30 hosts
  3. Switch
    1. Designed to connect many end hosts in the same LAN together, include many network interfaces to connect hosts to.
  4. Server
    1. Is an end hosts itself, not a networking device to connect other end hosts to.

Quiz 2

You received a video file from your friend’s iPhone using AirDrop. What was his iPhone functioning as in the transaction.

  • A Server
    • A device that provides functions or service for clients. Your friends phone provided a file to your phone
  • A client
    • Your phone, not your friends. A client access a service, it does not provide a service
  • A LAN
    • An end host, like a phone, does not function as a LAN by itself. It can however be a part of aLAN.

Quiz 3

What is your computer or smartphone functioning as while you watch this video?

  • A server
    • Your device is receiving a service, not providing one, so it is not functioning as a server
  • An end host
    • Although your device is an end host, that does not describe its function. Both servers and clients are end hosts in a network.
  • A client
    • Your device is receiving a service from YouTube’s servers. Therefore it is functioning as a client.

Quiz 4

Your company wants to purchase some networking hardware to connect its separate networks together. What kind of network device is appropriate?

  • A firewall
    • Although a firewall can connect multiple networks together, its real purpose is to monitor and control traffic as it enters and exits the network.
  • A host
    • The term “host’ can refer to any type of network node
  • A LAN
    • LAN stands for Local Area Network. A LAN is not a network device itself
  • A router
    • A router is a device that is designed to connect and forward network traffic between multiple networks

Quiz 5

Your company wants to upgrade its old network firewall that has been in use for several years to one that provides more advanced function. What kind of firewall should they purchase?

  • A host-based firewall
    • A host-based firewall is a piece of software that runs on an end host, like the firewall on your computer. It is not a network firewall
  • A next-level firewall
    • Not an actual type of firewall
  • A next-generation firewall
    • A next-generation firewall combines traditional firewall features with more advanced functionalities
  • A top-layer firewall
    • Not an actual type of firewall
